Top Tip 5: Auditory Training

Lesson 5

AUDITORY TRAINING IS ALL ABOUT MAKING YOUR CHILD AWARE OF SOUND...

Listen...What can you hear?

Your child has residual hearing and we need to help them make the most of it. We have to develop their listening skills and make them aware of sounds, where is the sound is coming from and also what type of sound it is.

What is making the sound? You need to make your child aware of sounds you can hear. As soon as you hear a sound...quickly get eye contact...point to your ear...and with an excited, happy 🙂 expression on your face say..."What can you hear?"...Tell them what is making the sound and quickly take your child and show them...

Also make them aware when the sound stops, and there is no sound. You can have a sad face when it stops....and most of all make this fun!

For example if the washing machine is spinning and making a loud sound...get eye contact...have a happy, excited expression on your face...point to your ear....say "what can you hear?"...tell them..."I can hear the washing machine"...quickly take them and show them the machine, let them feel the vibration of the machine while it is spinning. Wait for it to stop spinning and with a sad face say..."I can't hear". By repeating this every time you hear the machine spinning, you will be making your child aware of this sound and soon they will want to show you that they can hear the machine themselves.

Where is the sound coming from? By making your child aware of different sounds you can hear, you will be teaching them to localise sound.

They must react correctly to sound.

They must learn the meaning of sound.

We need to help them refine sounds; make them aware of environmental sounds, animal sounds or speech sounds.

Developing your child's listening skill should be FUN! 🙂
