Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town, knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone, so she could track Hughan’s progress.
Hughan has a farm mat which shows the lay out of a farm.
There is a farm house, stables, a bridge, a river, fields and fences on the mat.
I got all the animals that Vil took to the farm yesterday and we played “farmer”.
We had all the different animals grouped in separate parts of the mat. We named the animals and made the sounds.
Hughan tried to repeat each one after me. He knows all the sounds that they make without my help.
Then I got the storybook that I read to him last night and on each page we saw different animals.
I asked Hughan for the same animals and he was able to give me the animals that we saw for each page ie. the pigs on the page of the book – he would give me a pig from the animals.
I also used the Duplo animals mixed in with the farm animals. When we were finished playing I asked Hughan to put the plastic animals in the plastic bag and the Duplo animals in with the other Duplo. He thought this was fun.
(Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience…we are following our profoundly deaf son’s diary, from 1990, so you can see what we did to help him with his speech and hearing. Hughan is 25 years old now and he can hold a conversation on a phone. It is the little thing we did every day, over a long period of time, that has helped him.
