Wednesday 17/07/91 –1st Lesson In Cape Town

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what Vanessa at the Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town wrote in the ‘Diary’.

23 years ago today, Hughan and I were back in Cape Town, and Vanessa was writing in our diary.

I was being taught how to work with Hughan –

Our first lesson -

Activity: Tea set

Gosh, he is vocalising so much more and more words used more often! This is lovely.

“pour the or a” (for – pour the water) Hughan said to Vil.

“Open” said Hughan

Nice, you try to extend this to – “open the lid”.

When you want him to imitate – don’t break your sentence up. Give / me / the jug – say it as a whole sentence and expect it as such.

“More” said Vil – nice and clear.

“Hot,” Hughan said.

Instead of him saying “ta” now we can emphasise the name of the object.

For example – “cup” and then in a sentence “I want the cup” or “give me the cup”.

“rai-rai” Hughan said for round and round.

Lovely: you pointed out that the cup and saucer are the same colour. Reinforce the concept “the same” but pointing out things that are not the same, and then soon thereafter pointing out something that is the same.

Then the words he uses often and well into two word combinations.

For example – more – more water.

Thanks Sue and welcome back. It is lovely to see you guys again. I’m sorry you and isn’t feeling well and hope he’ll be well again soon. He cooperated well considering how he’s feeling.

Enjoy the afternoon.

(Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience…we are following our profoundly deaf son’s diary, from 1990, so you can see what we did to help him with his speech and hearing. Hughan is 25 years old now and he can hold a conversation on a phone. It is the little thing we did every day, over a long period of time, that has helped him.
