Monday 02/09/91 – Travelling Back To Botswana

Diary Notes - I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress between our return visits to the Centre every 3 months.

Willem was with me for the return trip to Gaborone in Botswana. We stopped several times during the day and drove the whole day and got home at 11pm.

What a great feeling to be home. Willem drove all the way. Nice to be together as a family.

While we were away I found Hughan was usually quiet unless there was something he was excited about. I think it was being on the move and staying in so many places.

He is responding well to sound.

Hughan finished his antibiotics on the 29th that he started on the 14th for his ear infection. Because of this I feel he has been very well during our trip. He has joined in well and has used his voice when encouraged.

The boys are enjoying being back home.I spent the day unpacking and relaxing.

While Vil was at home, during his school holidays, we generally spent the day together and I did not do any sit down sessions as I find it hard working with both the boys together. We get to do quite a lot, baking, painting, going to the shops, visiting friends etc.

(Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience…we are following our profoundly deaf son’s diary, from 1990, so you can see what we did to help him with his speech and hearing. Hughan is 29 years old now and he can hold a conversation on a phone. It is the little thing we did every day, over a long period of time, that has helped him.
