Monday 25/06/90 – back to Mafeking

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

We spent most of the day on the road, taking Willem’s Mum (Granny Dawn) back to Mafeking.

Saturday 23/06/09 – Baby Cousin

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

Over the weekend we went through to Mafeking to see Willem’s family. His sister has just had a baby and a little boy that they have called Sean.

Hughan loved the baby, his cousin. Granny was also there from Zimbabwe, so Vil was very excited to see her again.

Granny has a hearing problem so she feels very close to Hughan. We brought her back to Gaborone with us for the weekend.

Friday 22/06/90 – Wanting to go to playschool

Play school again. Hughan makes such lovely noises in the car on our way to school. Every morning he points to his schoolbag and pulls at the handle and talks away.

I know exactly what he wants, he wants to go to school.

His Play School Teacher mentioned today how he is venturing off by himself.

Thursday 21/06/90 – Coffee Table

I have started moving the coffee table, that is in the centre of the lounge, near the one large window in the lounge.

Hughan gets his little chair from the bedroom and puts it at the table. I sit on the carpet and face the light (window).

Our main topic today was the Lego.  We made a house, a car and played with the Lego playground set. Hughan is vocalising well.

Hughan and I went to play school. Hughan joins in well with the children and today was the first time that Hughan has been letting my hand go and doing things for himself.

He is also becoming more aware of the children talking, watching their faces etc..

We went to the farm in the afternoon.

Tuesday 19/06/90 – Crumpled paper

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

Willem’s still working at home. Willem gave Hughan a piece of crumpled paper and held it near his face and told Hughan to put the rubbish in the dustbin.

Hughan walked off with the paper and went into the kitchen and through the paper away in the dustbin.

As you can imagine we were all very pleased with him. He thought this was great. He did this several times.

Monday 18/06/90 – a bomb in Gaborone

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

A bomb went off in the night at Kalahari Ford (the Ford motor dealership in Gaborone), where Willem works. Destroying a car completely and blowing the roof off the showroom, shattering windows – also windows on the buildings across the road.

Willem had to dismiss staff and come home to work, while the building was being rebuilt.  Unbelievable damage was done, with police and all sorts asking questions and trying to work out who might have the incentive to do such a thing.

Sunday 17/06/90 – Father’s Day

Willem was very impressed with his present from Hughan. I got Vil to draw a picture on his card, which he also wrote inside of. He gave his Dad some biltong (dried cured meat).

Willem made a fuss of them both. The boys felt very proud of their gifts. Hughan was very pleased with himself.  He blew the candles out after dinner.

Saturday 16/06/90 – dog show

I took the boys to the dog show. Hughan enjoyed every moment.

We took Tina, our dog, with us so they could join in.

Friday 15/06/90 – making cards for Father’s Day

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

Today our main topic was the farm animals. Hughan and I spent a long time grouping all the animals the same together and he enjoyed watching me making the noises they all make.

Hughan went to play group. His teacher had made cards for Father’s Day. The children all stuck pictures on the front of the cards and painted in the middle of the card, and she held their hands and wrote their names in the middle as well (we still have the card Hughan made).

She attached each card to a beer with a ribbon, for them to give to their Dads.
