Tuesday 13/08/91 – A Trip To Mmabatho

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

Vil went to play with a friend for the day as Hughan, Grace and I went to Mmabatho shopping. It is about an hour and a half in the car and we also go through a boarder post. It was the first time Grace has been out of Botswana, and she thoroughly enjoyed seeing a bit of the outside world.

Hughan always loves the shops. He was very restless in the car and insisted on coming into the front.

I am having second thoughts of my trip to Zimbabwe.

Friday 09/08/91 – Very Good Eye Contact

Dear Vanessa (I was starting my next lot of ‘Diary’ notes that I would be sending to Vanessa

I decided to go to ‘Sefalane’ which is a big Wholesale Store. I took Hughan with me. He sat in the trolley and enjoyed being pushed about. I bought him a match box truck.

His eye contact is good and he is looking at me all the time for language.

Vil finished school early (last day of the school term).

Thursday 08/08/91 – Dancing To Music

I heard some South African music playing on ‘Good Morning South Africa’ TV channel this morning. I knew Hughan was with Grace so I went through to the lounge. Grace was dancing with Hughan which he was really enjoying. I took a photo of them.

We went to our usual play group in the afternoon.

Today I was going to send Vanessa my ‘Diary’ notes -

Vanessa, thank you for the puzzle you gave Hughan. He has played with it every night at bath time since we have been at home.

I have decided to go with the boys to Zimbabwe for 2 weeks. Vil’s school holidays start tomorrow and this is most probably the last chance I have of seeing my old friends before we move to Cape Town. I plan on leaving about the 18th August.

Thanks

Sue

Wednesday 07/08/91 – The Sand Pit

I lost the stone in my engagement ring over a year ago in the sandpit at the house. I have decided that I am going to go through it, sieving out the fine sand and washing the other sand. It is builders sand so it is not all fine.

Hughan has been a great help. He turns on and off the tap for me and plays with the fine sand I have sieved.

Monday 05/08/91 – Painting Together

Hughan and I had a lovely time painting this morning. I got his Duplo aeroplane and copied it. I drew one for Hughan. He watched me first paint mine and then he painted his.

I then asked him “What should Mummy draw?” he sain “ar” (car) which he painted quite well. He then asked for a “bu” (bus).

Friday 02/08/91 – Trying To Repeat Everything

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I took the boys to the cricket club for about an hour. It is Hughan’s favourite place – he loves the playground. We also saw a helicopter and a few aeroplanes (the cricket club is next a small aeroplane strip in Gaborone).

Hughan and I made ‘French fried toast’ together. He was trying to repeat everything I said in short sentences.

Thursday 01/08/91 – Sticking Pictures In Our Books

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

Today we stuck pictures into Hughan’s books.

I got the aeroplane magazine off the plane as it has lovely wildlife pictures in it, also cars, trucks, boats and aeroplanes etc.

I also bought Hughan the wild animal poster and the one of the pets.

As we cut animals out of the magazine we went through to Hughan’s bedroom and he was able to show me all the animals the same (the one we had cut out, with the one on the poster). He enjoyed this.

We also enjoyed gluing the pictures and sticking the pictures into his book.

As I was cutting the picture out I was saying ‘cut, cut, cut’ and without looking at me Hughan each time started saying the word without looking at me.

In the afternoon we went to our usual afternoon tea group. The children all had fun together. Vil is not too well. He is complaining of headaches.

We made a chocolate cake today.

Lots of language and Hughan was repeating things I was saying to him.

Hughan enjoys working in the kitchen.

We put the cake in the oven. Took it out when it was ready and later iced it.

He is talking well today.
