Thursday 04/07/91 – Picture Books

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We had a morning at home. We looked through Hughan’s books (we were sticking pictures into little books, so that if Hughan wanted to tell he something, he could sometimes use the books to help him explain what he was saying)) and discussed each picture.

Afternoon tea was at a friend’s house.

We went down the bumpy road to get there and Hughan was saying ‘bum, bum, bum (bump, bump, bump)’.

Wednesday 03/07/91 – Trying To Repeat The Words

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I hid the toy cars for Hughan, around the house using all the rooms.

We went through the actions – slow, fast, stop, go, pull and push – also swinging and picking me up (I picked Hughan up and he was trying to pick me up).

Hughan tried to repeat all the words as I was saying it (this was great fun).

I went to school to listen to Vil’s class reading.

Hughan rode his tricycle in the kitchen before dinner using the pedals. He was very pleased with himself.

Tuesday 02/07/91 – Pretending To Drive

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We drew a bee on a piece of paper and played with it making a ‘buzzing’ noise.

We went to our morning play group and sewing.

Vil went to a friend’s house for lunch.

Hughan is so funny driving his imaginary wheel in the car. He was determined we were going to fetch Vil today. He was saying ‘O ome’(no home) shaking his head.

We went down the bumpy road today to our friends house and he said ‘um,um,um’ for ‘bump’.

Monday 01/07/91 – Bees

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We played with the Duplo (lego). We made the aeroplane and built up all the different sets.

The farm yard, the circus set, the dustbin truck, the tractor and trailer set, then we lined them all up. Afterwards we started playing with the house set and the people.

I went to my candlewicking class and left Hughan with Grace.

We took Vil to tennis in the afternoon. Some bees were after Hughan’s drink and I was making the noise of a bee and trying to show him that they would sting him and to be careful.

Friday 28/06/91 – Fast and Slow

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I hid the trucks around the house again today.

Afterwards we got the road mat out and we played with the cars and trucks.

I told Hughan ‘the trucks are slow and the cars are fast’. I was making the noise of the cars.

When we had finished I put Hughan in his trolley and I was showing him – fast and slow (he was sitting in the trolley and I was pushing him).

We also did it moving slowly and running fast.

We had a visit to the doctor again. He will be on antibiotics for another week.

Cricket in the afternoon.

Thursday 27/06/91 – A Bumpy Road

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We went to the shops today. Hughan was trying to say ‘trolly’.

Afternoon tea was at a friend’s house. We had to go down a bumpy road to get to her house now, as they have moved. Hughan loves the bumpy road.

Wednesday 26/06/91 – Hiding Toys

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I hid trucks around the house today. He enjoyed this.

I would ask him ‘Where is the truck?’ Look behind the toilet, under Daddy’s bed, by the telephone, behind the curtain etc.

There was a cement mixer outside in the road that we went and watched. Hughan has a cement mixer truck and also a cement mixer toy. So we went and compared the toys with a cement mixer and Hughan said ‘rou, rou, rou’ (round, round, round) for the cement mixer turns round and round.

Sewing morning was at our friend’s house where the rabbits are. We fed the rabbits which all the children enjoyed. Hughan was able to stroke the rabbits today and felt how soft they are.

I played tennis in the afternoon.
