Friday 31/05/91 – A Visit To The Doctor

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I went to the doctor in the morning with Hughan as we were both sounding a bit rough.

We also went to the shops and the bank.

I had to go and sell cakes for Vil’s class at school, so Hughan had to stay at home for a while.

Vil had cricket in the afternoon.

Willem went to Bulawayo in Zimbabwe for the weekend with his boss to a motor racing meeting.

The boys both went to birthday parties on the Saturday afternoon.

We spent the day at the dam on Sunday with friends. The boys saw a fish being caught and then being put back in the water.

It was a lovely day.

Thursday 30/05/91 – Nature Study

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

Vil left his satchel at home, so Hughan and I walked to the school to take it to him.

On our way we had a lovely nature study lesson. Looking at the leaves on the grounds and in the trees, I showed him where they had come from.

We stopped and looked at flowers and smelt them, the sand and the stones and the grass.

We also stopped to look at the birds and we saw a beetle and the butterfly as well.

We watched the ants going into their nest hole.

It was a lovely outing and Hughan tried to copy most words.

Towards the end of our walk I started to ask him “where is the grass?” and he would show me.

He came home with his hand and pockets full of what we had collected. It was great fun.

In the afternoon we went to our usual play group get-together.

Wednesday 29/05/91 – Making Books

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

This morning we stuck pictures into Hughan’s books. He loves looking through them and knows a lot of the names of the items in the books now.

I went to reading at Vil’s school and later we went to a friend for tea.

Tuesday 28/05/91 – Playing With The Rabbits

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We went to sewing group where Hughan met up with all his little friends. We went to our friend’s house, where there are rabbits.

While Hughan was playing I asked him with no clues “where are the rabbits?” He instantly responded and pointed in the direction of the cage which is the other side of the swimming pool.

Everyone was very impressed. The children went into the cage and they watch them being fed.

Monday 27/05/91 – Time On My Own

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I started a candlewicking course and I have had my first break from Hughan this morning.

He was not impressed with me when I got home.

Grace says he had been busy helping her and they had had morning tea together. I picked him up so we could go together to fetch Vil from school.

Vil had his tennis lesson and Hughan to along a ball to play with.

While we were watching we saw a helicopter and an aeroplane fly over – great excitement.

Thursday 23/05/91 – Enjoying His Bike

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I started playing tennis today with a friend of mine. Hughan rode his bike around the housing complex (Bemcoville), while Grace walked behind.

When we first lived in Gaborone we lived at Bemcoville. It is a company owned complex that is walled with houses, duplex flats and small flats for the staff of Willem’s firm.

There is a communal tennis court and swimming pool also a playground for the children who live there. Hughan had a great time as it is a big property with lots of paths and roads.

Afternoon tea was at our house today, and we got to see all our friends again.

Wednesday 22/05/91 – Helping At Vil’s School

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

I decided today to shampoo Hughan’s carpets in his bedroom. The lady who sold me the machine came to show me how to use it. Hughan was very involved in helping. We moved all the furniture around and he had a little go at pushing the machine.

Vil has asked me to go to his school to listen to the children reading. I feel this is doing something for Vil, so at 11.15am I went to his school for the first time to listen to the children reading individually.

We went to a friend’s house for tea in the afternoon.

Tuesday 21/05/91 – Playing Well

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

We went to a Tupperware party in the morning.

Hughan joined in and played with the other children who were there. It was at a friend’s house and Hughan played with a friend in the sandpit.

A friend of mine came to tea. She has three sons. Her youngest son was born on the same day as Hughan and we shared a room together at the hospital. The children all played well.

Monday 20/05/91 – Playing With Cars

Diary Notes – 23 years ago today I wrote in my hearing impaired son’s diary. I was writing up Hughan’s ‘Diary’ so Vanessa, at The Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town (South Africa), knew what we were doing at home, in Gaborone in Botswana, so she could track Hughan’s progress.

Hughan and I played with his cars. We have a mat with roads marked out on it and Hughan was pushing cars along the road for the first time.

Vil started tennis lessons at the tennis club today. Hughan and I watched.
