Monday 11/02/91 – Painting

105

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

Hughan and I had a painting session today. I started a book of ‘Postman Pat’.

He is in his mail van on the road, up the road, over the hill and down etc.

I will also introduce the words – around, through, under etc.

Friday 08/02/91 – Changing Hearing Aids Round

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

Hughan has not been responding well to noises this week. I decided to change the hearing aids around and also put new batteries in. The batteries in the hearing aids were still giving off feedback (whistling noise), but anyway I changed them. The difference was immediate and he has responded well ever since (this was an indication that Hughan was hearing better on the one side, because when the hearing aids were switched round he could hear again using the other hearing aid).

This morning I took my friend to the wholesaler and she brought her son, who is hearing impaired, along with. He was quite overwhelmed with everything and the lights. We came back to the house and had tea. The boys played well.

Cricket for Vil later and Hughan enjoyed the playground equipment – slides, swings, an old car, a jungle gym boat with a steering wheel etc. at the cricket club.

Thursday 07/02/91 – Rooms of The House

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

We started the morning playing with the Duplo House set.

I started with the lounge and we went through all the furniture. Daddy (Duplo) arrived in his car and sat in his chair.

Then I built up the kitchen with mummy and the teapot and Hughan said “hot” for the teapot.

Then we put the bedroom together with the children in, and lastly the bathroom.

We put in the walls and the roof and Hughan enjoyed opening and closing the doors and putting the people through the doors.

Hughan also had two little boys friends arrived to play for the rest of the morning. They played in the paddling pool. After a while they had had enough so I put Hughan’s hearing aids in.

Later Hughan came and pointed to his ears and then the pool to say – “take them out, I want to play in the water”. He was very pleased when I obliged.

We went to play group in the afternoon and the boys swam.

Wednesday 06/02/91 – Farm Animals

131

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

Today I was writing to Vanessa at the Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town. This was how Vanessa was keeping up with the progress Hughan was making at home and the activities we were doing with him.

Dear Vanessa

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

This morning Hughan did not respond to me calling him, clapping or banging before Willem went to work.

I decided we would start the day noise making. I also made him aware of different sounds during the morning.

He has been very quiet today. We also played with farm animals as we are going to the farm later.

My maid took Hughan to show him the pigs with Vil and his friend. They also saw ducks, geese, sheep, goats, chickens, peacocks and the horses. Hughan had a lot to say on the way home.

Tuesday 05/02/91 – Joining In Well

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

Hughan and I went to sewing group. Hughan joined in well again with the children and was standing up for himself and communicating well. I was very pleased to see him playing so well and joining in.

Hughan is swimming very well now. I push him towards the state and he goes the last bit by himself. He was swimming well on his back today.

I am signing off now so Willem can post you what has been happening since we saw you last. We are looking forward to seeing you again. Willem and Vil will be joining Hughan and I in the second week (I posted my notes to Vanessa at the Carel du Toit Centre, so she knew what we were doing at home in Botswana).

Thanks

Sue

Monday 04/02/91 – Enjoying Making Books

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

(Hughan was 2 1/2 years old)

Hughan and I worked on his book today (see Making books). I put some water in the bath and put all his boats in the water then we got the boat pictures, so he was aware of a boat, and a boat going fast in the water.

He brought me his aeroplane when we stuck in the aeroplane pictures – to show me the same. He also stuck pictures of birds and butterflies in another book and we went into the garden to look for butterflies and birds.

Hughan is babbling well. We also watched his animal video and I paused on pictures to show him the animals in his book we have made.

He also brought out a ball for us to play with.

I felt today we had a very interesting morning, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

My friend picked the boys up in the afternoon to go and play. Hughan was very happy to go off and leave me.

Friday 01/02/91 – Watching Cape Town video 1

DIARY NOTES – In 1991, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the ‘Diary’.

In the morning I went with Hughan to the bank, and afterwards we went to pick our friends up (their youngest son is also hearing impaired).

We had a sound lesson today.

We watched a bit of video of Hughan, at the same age as their son now (please see video 1). I showed her he was not mobile and very, very, quiet. We also made her son aware of the washing machine spinning and the vacuum cleaner when switched on and off.

Vil started cricket today, and Hughan came along with his bike to play in the playground at the cricket club. Vil enjoyed his lesson.
