Friday 05/10/90 – Play school again

32

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Well we had quite an exciting day today. We started with playing with the Duplo house set as I had lost my car keys, and I had to wait for the driver from Willem’s work, to bring a spare set.

When the keys arrived it was just after nine o’clock, we went to play school. There is a new slide for the children that Hughan must have gone down at least 20 times.

He had a lovely time with water and mud!

About five of the children had a great time with bottles and toys in a huge tube of water. I was very careful not to let Hughan wet his hearing aids. By the time he had finished he was covered in mud. He enjoyed every moment of the morning.

In the afternoon we went swimming. Hughan is loving the water.

Thursday 04/10/90 – Duplo Granny wears glasses

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Dear Vanessa

Hughan and I had a lovely session with Hughan’s Duplo house set. He started saying “bed” today.

Granny in the Duplo Lego set wears glasses, so I got my glasses and put them on and showed him granny. He thought it was great. He had a turn with the glasses on then he picked granny up and pointed to her face.

We also swam in the afternoon and went to see friends for tea afterwards.

I am making a determined effort to get Hughan swimming as soon as possible.

Wednesday 03/10/90 – Writing to Vanessa

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Dear Vanessa

Hughan is saying quite a lot of words now, he tells me when he wants me to change his nappy.

He says “up” all the time. He says “o” if something is hot. He has said “baba” for a baby a few times now.

I find when I am working on a word and I pause and expect a response, he tries hard to repeat the word I have just said.

Today when Hughan woke up I expected him to say “up” and he did not respond, so I refused to oblige. It took a while and a few tears, but once he said it I showed him how clever he was, and then I picked him up.

I find when this happens he tried harder afterwards to communicate with his voice when there is something he wants.

Hughan’s face lightens up when I stayed to Hughan “daddy’s home”. He rushes off to the door, opens it, and has a beam from ear to ear when he sees Willem.

Willem is the greatest in Hughan’s eyes.

Hughan also loves getting Willem’s shoes out of the cupboard every morning. He never makes a mistake, he always produces a pair the same.

They also brushed their teeth together.

Hughan is trying to dance to music now. I play ‘Mango Groove’, which has a good beat to it. Hughan loves to feel the vibration from the music in the speaker which I put down to his level.

Willem and I are still planning to go to Seychelles. A very good friend of mine is coming from Zimbabwe to look after the boys while we are away. It will mean that life will just carry on as per usual. We will be away from the 6th to the 14th November, and I am due in Cape Town on the 19th to see you again. “yah!!!”

My housemaid will also be at the house to help my friend for any reason while we are away. Willem needs a break from work and I think the break will all do us all good.

We hope all is well in Cape Town and we are looking forward to seeing you again.

Cheers for now

Sue

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I took Hughan to see a friend in the morning.

I have been keeping away from play school as some of the children have got chickenpox, and I would rather concentrate on Hughan staying well at this stage.

We went swimming again in the afternoon. Hughan loves the water, and does not mind getting his face wet.

This is a picture of Hughan and Vil swimming at home.

Monday 01/10/90 – A Cardboard House

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Over the weekend I made the boys a cardboard house which they are both very pleased with. Vil has been on about a house for a while, so I decided it was time to make them one.

Today is a holiday so Willem and I took the boys out to the Gaborone dam for a barbeque lunch. We went with some friends. There was a Kite Eagle (bird) flying over our barbeque spot, so we decided to throw it some meat. It tried to catch the meat several times. It was a magnificent sight and all the children and grown-ups watched in disbelief at what we were seeing. Hughan was amazed and watched on.
