Wednesday 17/10/90 – Babbling more

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

We went to play school in the morning. I am finding Hughan is babbling a lot more with the other children.

I give him any language he might need, but he is definitely trying to communicate well with the others. Most of the children are only saying their first word anyway, so they understand what he is saying to them.

In the afternoon I took the boys to the game Park and we saw lots of wild animals. Hughan enjoys every moment, often waving to the animals.

Tuesday 16/10/90 – Tea with friends

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Friends came for tea in the morning. Hughan had four other children to play with. We had our fairy cakes for tea.

Vil, Hughan and I had a great time blowing bubbles in the afternoon.

Vil later came running in to tell me that Hughan said “gone” and he sounded the ‘g’ and ‘n’ sounds. He has been trying to say it for a while, but not sounding out the whole word. I had heard Vil praising Hughan at the time. I was very pleased with Vil.

Monday 15/10/90 – Enjoying the garden

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan’s fingers are looking okay, but very tender. He has a blood blister under the one nail.

This morning we made some fairy cakes, baked them and iced them together.

Hughan enjoyed helping.

Hughan loves the garden, he is always wanting to go out to play. He enjoys the birds and we occasionally the cats in the garden. He likes joining in with our gardener who works three days a week.

Sunday 14/10/90 – Fingers caught in door

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

We went to Sunday school.

Willem is very busy at work as it is the company’s financial year end.

I took Vil to the video shop to get a tape and while I was there Hughan got his hand caught in the front door. The door closed on his two middle finger nails on the right hand. It was quite frightening.

Poor Hughan cried so much. I went straight to the chemist and we put his hand in cold water. Once we got home I gave him some Calpol syrup (paracetamol) and he went to sleep.

Friday 12/10/90 – Playing with water

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I took Hughan to play school in the morning. He had a super time playing with the water. Today I removed his hearing aids for the time he was playing with the water. I didn’t want to take a chance with them getting wet.

Vil had a friend to play in the afternoon and Hughan joined in nicely.

Thursday 11/10/90 – Playing with a ball

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan and I had a lovely time playing with a ball.

In the afternoon we went visiting.

Wednesday 10/10/90 – Playing in the rain

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Picture – Vil and Hughan enjoying the rain.

Today it rained most of the time. I didn’t take Hughan to school because of the weather. Instead we played with shapes and puzzles.

The boys sleep in a bunk bed. Hughan climbed up the ladder and stood on Vil’s bed, and was looking at the alphabet frieze that I have put around the room.

He was looking at all the pictures and babbling away. And when he came to the ‘H’ for house he pointed down to the cardboard house I have made the boys. I was impressed he showed me the comparison.

Hughan loves custard. He decided he wanted some. He found a box of ‘cream’ and took it out, got himself a dish out of the cupboard and discovered when he went to pour himself some that the box had not been opened, we then went to the drawer for the scissors and babbling away, but I knew exactly what he wanted. I showed him the scissors and then told him “no” and took the cream away and gave him some custard. He was very pleased with himself.

Tuesday 09/10/90 – Saying more words

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan and I met with friends in the morning. Hughan was trying to say “ball” today. He is saying more and more all the time although he might not say something and he won’t repeat it again for a while. In the afternoon I took Hughan to visit a friend. He had a lovely game with a gun. We were all saying “pow, pow”. He is babbling very well with the other children.

Willem asked Hughan to get him a beer from the fridge. He went off to the fridge and the front beers were in a pack, so he couldn’t get one, so he bent down and got one from the back. In the fridge we keep all different types of drinks, but Hughan knows that Willem drinks the beers.

Monday 08/10/90 – Playing music

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

We had another enjoyable morning at play school. Hughan enjoyed sewing wool through cards with a picture on.

He is joining in very well with the children. For the first time ever he got himself ready for playing music. He picked up a tambourine and got himself a chair and sat down to wait for his teacher to join the circle.

I went and sat next to him and then he wanted to sit on my lap. He is also joining in with hand movements very well.

Sunday 07/10/90 – The Game Park

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

The first time Hughan went to Sunday school, which he thoroughly enjoyed.

We all went to the Gaborone game Park in the afternoon.

The rhinos were within 10 foot of the car, but we had a fence between us and them. The boys were very impressed.

We saw kudu, wildebeest, monkeys, ostrich and a jackal. It is the first time we have it had been to the game Park and now we have been I am sure we will go often. The rhinos were very impressive.

( it is great to follow up an outing like this with a book which has zoo animals in, wild animals or play with plastic animals)
