Wednesday 31/10/90 – Visiting Ramotswa Deaf School

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I went out to the deaf school in Ramotswa this morning with a friend and her daughter (who is also profoundly deaf – and attended the Carel du Toit Centre as a child).

I took Hughan with me. We went to take some toys and things out for the children. The head of the centre was very pleased with what we had donated.

Vil had his swimming gala and won both his races.

Hughan’s fingernail had come off and shame, they are looking very sore.

We had a swim in the afternoon. We played with the farmyard animals and Hughan is making the noises very well now.

Tuesday 30/10/90 – Babbling Different Sounds

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

In the morning Hughan and I went to visit friends. Hughan is joining in and keeping up quite well with his friends. If one of his little friends gets on his bike, he gets quite upset and tells them off.

Hughan brought me a sheep and said “ba,ba”. He babbles a lot with varying tones.

In the afternoon friends came to the house for a swim.

Monday 29/10/90 – Paddling Pool

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

In the morning I filled Hughan’s paddling pool with water and Hughan had a great time with all his Bath time toys.

He also gave his bike a wash. Vil made a black paper cats at school today and Hughan said “meow” when he saw it. We went around the house looking at all our cat pictures and ornaments.

When it got dark I showed Hughan the moon and the stars. He tries hard to say his words now.

We also swam in the afternoon.

Friday 26/10/90 – The Cricket Club

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

As a treat today I took the boys to the cricket club. We went late afternoon and stayed until after it had gone dark. Hughan was very interested in the moon. I showed him it – first saying “where is the moon” then I pointed to it. During the evening every time I mentioned the moon he looked up.

The cricket club is next to the Botswana air force airfield and we watched the lights on a plane take off and land. Hughan is trying to say “lights” and several times in the evening “moon”.

Over the weekend we swam several times and Willem and I took the boys to the game Park. When Hughan want to know what is going on he looks at my face now for the language.

Thursday 25/10/90 – A Birthday Party

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I took Hughan to a birthday party in the morning. He joined in very well with all the children. When the cake was brought out Hughan and or the other children were very keen to blow the candles out.

In the afternoon we went out to tea. Hughan says “Yayye” for daddy, when he is talking about Willem.

Thank you for the newsletter. We were all very shocked at the news of Prof Carel du Toit.

Wednesday 24/10/90 – Playing with Aeroplanes

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan and I played with aeroplanes today. The Duplo Lego plane and ones we have collected. Hughan knows how to put the Duplo plane together. After Hughan had had his sleep at lunchtime, he came in through with all his swimming things. I told him “no” we can’t swim now, and he had an instant sulk on his face.

I then said he was going in the pushchair (which he was not sure what I meant). Once I showed him the pushchair he was excited. We walked to Vil’s school as he had a swimming lesson. When we got back home we all had a swim.

Vil played nicely with Hughan as well. When he makes up his mind to talk to Hughan he is very good and waits for Hughan to look at him before he gives him his speech, holding the item near his face.

Tuesday 23/10/90 – Car Noises

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan and I went to visit friends in the morning. Hughan started saying “brum, brum” for a car noise, which was exciting.

Friends came to see us in the afternoon and we all went swimming. Hughan loves his swimming.

Monday 22/10/90 – The Airport

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

We painted today at home. Vil had a friend to play in the afternoon and we all had a swim.

In the evening Willem picked as all up and we had a trip to the airport – to go and see the largest aeroplane in the world, which had landed to bring some equipment from Germany for a company in Botswana.

Just about the whole of Gaborone had gone to the airport to see it. It was all very exciting.

Then we went to Willem’s work, and Hughan was very interested with everything.

Friday 19/10/90 – Swinging

81

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I put some swings in the garden. We had to saw some branches off the tree and tie ropes on a branch and put the tyres on as swings. The rest of the day was spent on the swings. Vil was very pleased with the idea and the boys had a great time.

We also had a swim in the afternoon.

Hughan’s fingernails are looking very sore and I have spoken to the doctor and they have stayed at the nails are going to come off.

Over the weekend we went to the game Park again with some of our friends. We saw lots of game and Hughan points his finger when he sees the animals now.

We also went swimming quite a few times.

When I call Hughan or speak to him when I am with friends or there are quite a lot of children around, I find I call and call and eventually show him I am calling by going into his vision, whereas I get a good response, when we are by ourselves.

Sometimes I walk into a room and say “hi” and Hughan often does not turn around, but says “hi” in response (indicating he heard).

He also said “dinner” on Sunday. Vil was so excited. We made a great fuss of Hughan.

Thursday 18/10/90 – Noisy toys

39

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Hughan and I had a super session with all our noise making toys. I covered the top and shook it before Hughan took out a toy from underneath. Hughan really enjoyed the time we spent together.
