Saturday 15/09/90 – the circus

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Willem and I took the boys to Boswell circus. We sat in the front row and we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

A real treat for Gaborone to have a circus in town!

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Our little lesson today was with plastic animals, which Hughan enjoyed. He is trying to copy me with the sounds.

“The cow says——- moo”, “the sheep says———bah”, etc.

We also played with Hughan’s new wooden puzzle with the aeroplane, ship, truck, train and bus.

He is often trying to copy me saying something now.

This is a picture of  Hughan playing with the plastic farm animals.

Thursday 13/09/90 – playing with wool

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

In the morning Hughan found some wool in a bag and emptied the balls of wool onto the table. He put them in a line and then we put them back in the packet. He emptied them out again and we matched the colours together before putting them away.

Later on we all went to a friend’s house for tea.

Hughan joined in with the children well.

Wednesday 12/09/90 – watching a video

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Vil has a video tape with some animals in. Today I decided Hughan and I were going to sit together and watch it. The piece I wanted to show him is not very long, so we ended up watching it three times. The film showed a zebra, a Leopard, Lions, ostrich, elephants, lots of birds and a Peacock with its feathers spread out.

Hughan sat on my lap and I sang along with the music, telling him the names of the animals. He loved it. There is also a parrot that talks. I would tell him “the elephant has a long nose, and big ears”, and the third time around he has pointed to his nose and his ears.

We also went to the farm in the afternoon.

These are 2 pictures of Hughan watching the video.

Tuesday 11/09/90 – meeting friends

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

I am not feeling so great, my voice is also a bit croaky! Nevermind, we had quite a good day.

Two of my friends and their little ones came for tea in the morning. We are going to start meeting on a regular basis. All boys and they had a great time, building with blocks and playing with cars.

Vil (Jamie) had two friends to play in the afternoon. I made a picnic basket, and put a sleeping bag in the garden (for them to sit on) and all the boys had a picnic.

Hughan has started to say “open” and “close” to day.

I am still conscious of not raising the tone of my voice in my last word and when I do I am aware of it! We are still trying.

Hughan has decided that it’s a great idea moving his chair around and standing on it to look onto surfaces. He is also getting more confidence with his walking and at times trying to run everywhere.

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Picture – Hughan being helpful, mopping the floor in our kitchen.

Play school again today. Hughan loved every moment. He enjoys the music and joining in with all the hand motions. He has started going off by himself and joining in well with the others.

Willem’s sister has given Hughan a puzzle with a wooden aeroplane, train, bus, ship and track with handles which fit into the wooden base.

Hughan is putting all the shapes back and the aeroplane he put it above his head, the first time he played with it, and tried to say “up in the sky” we all clapped our hands and he thought this was great.

This is a picture of Hughan mopping the kitchen floor, being very helpful.

Friday 07/09/90 – play school

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary.

Today was Hughan’s first day back at play school. Everyone remarked on the change they saw in him. He was a lot more mobile and babbling a lot more as well.

He was so excited being back. I took his motorbike with, but only spent a short time on it. He enjoyed joining in with the actions of the songs and climbing the ladder which was in the playground.

This is a picture of Hughan on the right, playing with a drum, joining in with his little friends.

We also stopped to watch some donkeys at the side of the road.

Thursday 06/09/09 – playing hockey

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary

Vil and Hughan had a lovely game of hockey (if you can call it that). I helped Hughan hold his plastic stick and Vil and Hughan enjoyed the game, hitting the ball to each other.

We had friends for tea and Hughan was vocalising well with the children and following them around and joining in the fun. He also turned around to me calling him in the garden.

Wednesday 05/09/90 – hiding toys in a bowl

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary

This morning I hid a lot of toys in a big bowl. Hughan enjoyed putting his hand in and pulling out each item.

In the afternoon we went to the farm. We took Hughan to the dairy and watched the cows being milked. Hughan was very excited.

Hughan tried to say “pull” and “push” today.

Tuesday 04/09/90 – a visit to the Lake

DIARY NOTES – In 1990, 23 years ago today this is what I wrote in the diary -

Vil’s last day of school holidays! I took the boys for a chocolate milkshake for a treat. In the afternoon a friend and I took the children to the Lake for afternoon tea.

On the way we saw rock rabbits, Impala and kudu. We all had a great time. Hughan turned around again to me calling to him first time. Sometimes he responds and other times I eventually come into his vision before he realises I am speaking to him.

On a TV programme today in the cartoon a wolf knocked on the door and Hughan copied him by knocking on the table.
