Tuesday 31/07/90-Sticking pictures

In 1990, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

Today we had a great time sticking pictures on a piece of paper, an aeroplane, a man on a bicycle, a car, an umbrella, a lady combing her hair, an eye, and fingers.

For every picture I produced an object – ie. a toy aeroplane, Vil’s bicycle (and I sat on it), a car etc.

He then stuck it on the play room wall. He enjoyed today’s play.

Monday 30/07/90-Balloons

In 1990, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

Our main topic today were balloons – colours, blowing the balloons up, playing with the balloons, also blowing the balloons up and then letting them go which Hughan really enjoyed.

Sunday 29/07/90-Family weekend

In 1990, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

We had a super weekend with Willem’s sister and her husband and their children (baby Sean).

Willem’s brother and his girlfriend also were with us. Fun was had by all. We watched your video, which they all enjoyed, and also went through this book.

Friday 27/07/90- Family visit

In 1990, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

Willem’s family are coming through to Gaborone for the weekend and I changed the rooms around and Hughan got very concerned about all of the changes.

When it was bedtime he was fine.

We played with shapes and puzzles.

We all went to tea in the afternoon. Hughan is very confidence now – going off to play by himself with the other children.

Wednesday 25/07/90 – Sandpit

In 1990, 23 years ago, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

Hughan and I went to play school. He decided today he was going to play in the sand. What a mess!

The sandpit at school is not play sand, it is sand that has got mixed with the soil, and the kids come out dirty.

Hughan enjoyed every moment. He is also enjoying his music more and more.

We went to the farm in the afternoon.

Tuesday 24/ 07/90 – Noisy toys

In 1990, 23 years ago, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary…

We played with Hughan’s  stick a bricks. I made him an aeroplane and a truck which he thought was great.

He got up from his chair and started babbling, he walked through to the bedroom still talking away, and he produced the basket with all the noise making toys. So we carried on with sounds.

Monday 23/ 07/90 – Babbling more

We went to play school.

As usual Hughan got very excited when we were leaving home and enjoyed playing at school.

He has started talking in the car a lot more now. Sometimes he doesn’t stop.

Saturday 21/07/90 – a letter

In 1990, 23 years ago, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary

I wrote a letter to Vanessa with the notes from the diary.

The boys played with play dough over the weekend. We have seen a big change in Hughan lately. He is trying to say words like – up, more, hello, hi, boo and when he wants something he will say a long sentence of babbling with varied tones.

He enjoyed holding his hands at our throats to feel the vibration of us speaking. He also does it to himself and enjoys us doing it to him as well.

He is walking everywhere now with more confidence. Friends have all commented on the change in him and the way he is talking away. Eye contact is great!

We are looking forward to our trip to Cape Town. I am bringing Vil with me as he will be in his school holidays.

Vil plays very well with Hughan and always likes to include him. Willem and I encourage him all the time to talk to him as he tends to play in silence with him unless he is encouraged. I would like to try and involve Vil once also in our play when we are with you, so you can encourage him as well.

I came home feeling much more confident in myself after the last trip, so I am sure when Vil watches he will get the idea.

Sorry I have not written to you sooner. I don’t think you will have time to write back to me before we leave for Cape Town. I have lots of photos to show you of Hughan’s school and moments at home.

I have also watched the video you did of our last class together. Thanks for your interest and encouragement it really helped.

Take care

Love

Sue

Saturday 21/07/90-Sponsored walk

In 1990, 23 years ago, this is what I wrote in our hearing impaired son’s diary - I wrote to Vanessa at the Carel du Toit Centre in Cape Town to send her my diary notes….this is what I wrote in the diary.

Dear Vanessa

I hope you got my last letter ok!  Time flies, and it won’t be long until we will be in Cape Town again.

Saturday 21/07/90

Vil had a sponsored walk on at school. His teacher assured me I didn’t have to walk with him as they had no major roads to cross. So I left him to walk and went to get Hughan.

When I got back to school, Vil had walked the measured kilometre twice and had decided he didn’t want to walk again.

So I said I would walk once around with him and Hughan. I gave Hughan a piggyback which he really enjoyed.

On Sunday we played with all the noise making toys. Hughan is also asking a lot more to play our piano and he plays quite well using his fingers.
