Monday 18/06/90 – a bomb in Gaborone

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

A bomb went off in the night at Kalahari Ford (the Ford motor dealership in Gaborone), where Willem works. Destroying a car completely and blowing the roof off the showroom, shattering windows – also windows on the buildings across the road.

Willem had to dismiss staff and come home to work, while the building was being rebuilt.  Unbelievable damage was done, with police and all sorts asking questions and trying to work out who might have the incentive to do such a thing.

Willem was very impressed with his present from Hughan. I got Vil to draw a picture on his card, which he also wrote inside of. He gave his Dad some biltong (dried cured meat).

Willem made a fuss of them both. The boys felt very proud of their gifts. Hughan was very pleased with himself.  He blew the candles out after dinner.

I took the boys to the dog show. Hughan enjoyed every moment.

We took Tina, our dog, with us so they could join in.

Friday 15/06/90 – making cards for Father’s Day

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

Today our main topic was the farm animals. Hughan and I spent a long time grouping all the animals the same together and he enjoyed watching me making the noises they all make.

Hughan went to play group. His teacher had made cards for Father’s Day. The children all stuck pictures on the front of the cards and painted in the middle of the card, and she held their hands and wrote their names in the middle as well (we still have the card Hughan made).

She attached each card to a beer with a ribbon, for them to give to their Dads.

Thursday 14/06/90 – not responding to our voices

23 years ago this is what I wrote in the diary…Helping parents with hearing impaired children through our experience….

Hughan is still not responding to our voices. We play games every day with banging, knocking, tapping etc.

His babbling is improving – “mum, mum, mum”, “ ab, ab”, ”wha, wha”, “ba”.

We went and visited friends today.

Today our main topic was the farm animals. Hughan and I spent a long time grouping all the animals the same together and he enjoyed watching me making the noises they all make.

At dinner time I involved Vil. Each mouthful Vil would take an animal out of the bag and make the noises. They had a great time.

I took Hughan to play group this morning. He had a great time. Hughan is definitely vocalising better. He gets to do so many things.

At play group the children all sit in a circle and they have rattles, drums etc. and the lady who takes the group sings songs and makes music with the children. I sit opposite her with Hughan on my lap, and we join in.

Friday 08/06/90 – Vil is not well

23 years ago, this is what I wrote in the diary …..Helping parents with deaf children through our experience…

Vil was sick, so we had a visit to the doctor.

Over the weekend Vil, Hughan and Willem had some great moments together. Willem played cricket on the Saturday so we all went and watched.

At the cricket club they have a playground for the children with an old car in it. There is also a boat Jungle gym, that Hughan had a great time on. It has a swivel seat, steering wheel, a ladder and a slide, which as you can imagine kept him very busy.

Vil and Hughan also went on the seesaw.

Poor Vil, at the end of the day, was stung by a bee on his tongue. He picked up his cool drink to have a drink and there was a bee inside. He is okay, but as you can imagine he got himself into quite a state.

Wednesday 06/06/90 – trolley with bricks

10

This is what I wrote in the diary 23 years ago…..Helping parents with deaf children through our experience…

Hughan is still not turning round to us when we speak to him, also when we are noise making, but we are all making him aware, by making a noise and bringing the item into his vision.

Hughan loves his trolley that he pushes around with the bricks in it. Today he spent a long time with me taking the bricks out of the trolley and putting them back in.

When we put them back into the trolley the bricks make that ‘klank’ noise.
